I’m developing a Safari App Extension and I want to debug the background.js script.
However, I can’t find any tool or option to do this.
When I run the extension from Xcode using the ProjectName Extension (macOS) scheme, I expect to see a “ProjectName” item under the Develop → Web Extension Background Content menu.
But there’s nothing there.
Has anyone encountered the same issue? How did you fix it?

Hi,
I am developing an OpenType font with the following cursive feature.
feature curs {
lookup cursivejoinrtl; # RIGHT_TO_LEFT flag set between Hah, Meem, Yeh and final Meem
lookup rehwawcursive; # RIGHT_TO_LEFT flag clear between Waw and Hah
} curs;
Here is the rendering of the word وحميم in TextEdit.
Using HarfBuzz I got the following result.
The same rendering problem occurs when using Safari. It seems that is related to Core Text.
I reported the issue to Feedback Assistant over a year ago but haven't had a response yet. So I'm posting the problem on this forum.
Any support on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Our current iOS application utilizes WKWebView to display a web application. We've observed intermittent deletion of non-expired 1st-party persistent cookies within this web application, leading to session drops.
Here are our environment details and specific questions:
Environment:
App Build: Built with Xcode 16.2.
WebView Class: WKWebView.
Cookie Type: 1st-Party Persistent Cookie (Explicit expiration set, not a session cookie).
Domain Configuration: The content server and the cookie-issuing server are the same (same IP address, same eTLD+1). The Cookie is set via the Set-Cookie HTTP Header on the server side.
Questions:
Automatic Deletion Policy: Are there any scenarios (e.g., related to iOS system behavior, Safari policies, or Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP)) where iOS or Safari might automatically delete non-expired 1st-party persistent cookies used by WKWebView?
Deletion Conditions: If the answer to Q1 is Yes, under what specific conditions (e.g., memory pressure, inactivity, storage limits, specific ITP criteria) does this cookie deletion occur, and does the behavior differ significantly across various iOS versions?
OS Update Impact: Are there any known specifications or documented cases where an iOS version update itself triggers the mass deletion of existing cookies stored in the WKWebsiteDataStore?
Mitigation Strategy: If this automatic deletion is a known behavior, what mitigation strategies are officially recommended to ensure the persistence of essential 1st-party authentication cookies (e.g., manual synchronization with WKHTTPCookieStore or Keychain/UserDefaults)?
Official Documentation: If the answer to Q1 is Yes, please provide URLs to any official Apple documentation or technical notes that detail the specifications or behavior of 1st-party persistent cookie deletion within WKWebView.

Problem
As the title says, Safari lost all my tabs once I updated to macOS 15.4. I do of course have "Safari opens with: All windows from last session" set. This has been my default for many years.
Past Mitigation
In the past I had a script that I could use to backup ~/Library/Safari that would save all my bookmarks and tabs. Unfortunately they made this method of backup non-function sometime around when tab groups were introduced.
Suggestion
Fortunately my tab groups are still intact. But this sort of problem doesn't give me a lot of confidence. I haven't had something like this happen in a while, but when it does happen, it's quite frustrating. Apple really needs to recognize that this sort of thing can and will happen and they should make it easier for users to manually save/restore their tabs.
Problem with forums
To add insult to injury, as I was typing this message in the forum, I decided to select "Edit Bookmarks"... which proceeded to replace the current window with my bookmarks, thereby losing my post! It did this without warning of page content changes (which I get from most other websites).
I felt somewhat relieved that the forum had recognized a previous draft and offered for me to continue. However, when I selected it, it brought me back to an old post... that was actually posted!

Hi,
we have PWA for which we´ve built a wrapper using PWA Builder tool and we are experiencing an issue with apple sign in.
When we try to redirect the user to "https://appleid.apple.com/auth/authorize?...params...", a bottom sheet login prompt appears and only once the user signs in using the prompt he is then redirected to the url where he needs to sign in again and then we get the callback. We want to get rid of that bottom sheet prompt.
The code we´ve tried:
` iosButton.addEventListener('click', function () {
window.location.href = "https://appleid.apple.com/auth/authorize?client_id=xxxxx&redirect_uri=xxxxx&response_type=code%20id_token&scope=name%20email&response_mode=form_post";
});`
The alternative code we´ve tried for which it seems that nothing happens, we only see the "Started" alert, we´ve confirmed that there is no other error :
` <script src="https://appleid.cdn-apple.com/appleauth/static/jsapi/appleid/1/en_US/appleid.auth.js"></script>
<script>
(function initAppleSignIn() {
try {
window.AppleID.auth.init({
clientId: "{{ env('APPLE_WEB_CLIENT_ID') }}",
scope: "name email",
redirectURI: window.location.origin +"/auth/apple/callback",
usePopup: true
});
} catch (e) {
console.warn('Apple Sign-In init skipped:', e);
}
})();
function appleButtonClicked() {
alert("Started");
try {
const res = await window.AppleID.auth.signIn();
} catch (err) {
alert("Got error");
}
alert("Got here");
}
</script>
Hi, in our app we have a WKWebView with complex web content that is loaded with cachePolicy: .reloadIgnoringLocalCacheData. If the app is in the background for several hours and returns in the foreground we noticed that the system reloads the webpage, but it does so with a cachePoliy returnCacheDataElseLoad. This could break the app if older cache content is present.
To reproduce start an app in the simulator (tested with iOS 17.2), put it in the background and via activity monitor stop the processes
com.apple.Webkit.WebContent
com.apple.Webkit.networking
After foreground the reload will happen.
Two questions:
why is this reload happening after some hours in the background? We haven't seen any crash reports related to this. It mostly happens on one of our test devices (iphone13 with iOS17.2.1).
why is the webview reloading with a modified cachePolicy (returnCacheDataElseLoad)?
Our temporary fix is to detect this case in "webView:decidePolicyFor navigationAction decisionHandler", cancel the request and reload with modified cachePolicy.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Heiko
Sample code:
class ViewController: UIViewController, WKNavigationDelegate, WKUIDelegate {
var webView: WKWebView!
override func viewDidLoad() {
super.viewDidLoad()
let config = WKWebViewConfiguration()
webView = WKWebView(frame: .zero, configuration: config)
webView.uiDelegate = self
webView.navigationDelegate = self
view.addSubview(webView)
let myRequest = URLRequest(url: URL(string: "https://www.apple.com")!, cachePolicy: .reloadIgnoringLocalCacheData)
print("request \(myRequest)")
webView.load(myRequest)
}
func webView(_ webView: WKWebView, decidePolicyFor navigationAction: WKNavigationAction, decisionHandler: @escaping (WKNavigationActionPolicy) -> Void) {
print("start loading \(String(describing: navigationAction.request.url)), cache:\(navigationAction.request.cachePolicy)")
decisionHandler(.allow)
}
override func viewDidLayoutSubviews() {
super.viewDidLayoutSubviews()
let fullscreen = CGRect.init(x: 0, y: 0, width: view.frame.size.width, height: view.frame.size.height)
webView.frame = fullscreen
}
}
YouTube now requires a Referer to be sent to be able to embed Youtube videos, otherwise the videos won't work. But WKWebView doesn't send a Referer when using a custom scheme, so Youtube videos stopped working in that case.
This affects Ionic apps, both using Cordova or Capacitor. There's an open issue for Cordova and another one for Capacitor. In these apps, the app is served using a custom scheme like capacitor://localhost or ionic://localhost.
I tried modifying the Ionic WebView source code to force adding a referrer to the URL loaded using WKWebView's loadRequest:
[request addValue:@"https://my.test.app" forHTTPHeaderField:@"Referer"];
[_engineWebView loadRequest:request]
But the Referer is still not sent in the Requests, I guess because the app is using a custom scheme (e.g. capacitor://localhost). However, if I modify this code to force loading an "online URL" (using https) instead of capacitor://localhost, then the my.test.app Referer is sent to the requests.
Is there any way to make WKWebView send a Referer when using a custom scheme?
I'm encountering an issue with front camera video recordings via browser (Safari/Chrome) on devices running iOS/iPadOS 18 and above:
On iPad, the recorded video appears upside down.
On iPhone, the recorded video is rotated 90 degrees.
The rear camera functions correctly without orientation issues.
This problem seems specific to browser-based recordings, as the native Camera app records videos with the correct orientation.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Is there a known workaround or fix?
The preview while recording is fine, the recorded video is oriented incorrectly.
The passkey authentication dialog appears, and after unlocking with Touch ID, the dialog closes without any notification of success or failure.
This issue occurs with high frequency.
access to the https://passkeys-demo.appspot.com/
register account and create passkey.
logoff
access to the url again
you can see the passkey dialog
unlock device then the dialog disappears
nothing happens
reload the page
proceed 5) to 6)
nothing happens or success webauthn.

I still can reproduce it with Safari on iPadOS 26.0.1
This issue also happens to my app when opening a HTML/JS on WKWebView with white background while using dark mode. I did send a feedback ticket when using iPadOS 26 beta but havent seen any reply. This is my first time sending a feedback so I dont know if Apple would reply or not.
Whenever I make a safari view controller on XCode26 Beta 5, there appears to be a blurry white overlay overtop the controller. This worked fine in XCode26 Beta 2, with no code differences.
Anyone have any suggestions?
After updating to the new iOS, in Safari, my overlays and backdrops using 100dvh no longer cover the full screen there's now a gap at the bottom.
Switching to 100vh fixes it, but that causes scrolling issues on older Safari versions since 100vh includes extra height.
Has anyone else experienced this? What's the recommended fix that works across iOS versions?
Hello,
I'm not able to get the webauthn attestation statement using the option (attestation.direct) on Safari. The answer I get is a fmt of none and a aaguid of zeros.
The same code works on Chrome and I was able to get a none zero aaguid and a packed fmt attestation.
Can you explain why this does not work on Safari ?
Thank you.
Hi, this is my first post in the community, so please correct me if i am posting this somewhat in a wrong manner.
Im using my Apple M1 Pro(14inch, 2021) and installed the os 26 yesterday.
Today, I was using Safari, and all of sudden it gets frozen, then the following window popped up.
Is this something expected? i.e. my usage is somewhat unusual or is there any report around potential memory leak in Safari? appreciate any suggestions, as Safari is my main browser and currently on hold due to this issue. Thanks
After updating to Safari 26.0 (on macOS Sequoia or Tahoe), the Declarative Net Request (DNR) API rule with "type": "redirect" no longer works as expected.
When the rule is applied, the browser initially shows a banner at the top of the page:
"This webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred."
After the reload, the page fails to load and displays an error page with the message:
"A problem repeatedly occurred with https://extensionworkshop.com/?test=true "
This behavior is new in Safari 26.0. The same rule was working correctly in earlier Safari versions (17.x / 18.x).
Hi,
I have an app that uses WKWebView and it's crashing on iOS 26 Simulator in places I've never had problems before. In this case it's crashing when calling WKWebView.callAsyncJavaScript, but in my other project WKWebView is crashing with some sort of EXC_BAD_ACCESS other than callAsyncJavaScript.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,

We have a JavaScript api that queries our Secure Browser to get the network information – signal strength, network name, plugged in/wifi. Everything worked fine through the Tahoe betas, still does. Now we are getting on the network name and this is breaking our UI. Was this an intentional change or a bug? The other two properties still appear to be working. And it works in all lower MacOS versions.
We are currently obtaining it through AppleScript
try
set ssid to do shell script "system_profiler SPAirPortDataType | awk '/Current Network Information:/ {getline; sub(/^ +/, ""); sub(/:$/, ""); print}'"
if ssid is equal to "" then
return "Not connected to any Wi-Fi network."
else
return ssid
end if
on error errMsg
return "Error: " & errMsg
end try

"The Safari web extension packager enables you to package and distribute your Safari extensions using App Store Connect from any web browser, without requiring a Mac or access to Xcode."
I upload the unzipped folder I'd test in Chrome://extensions to the Safari web extension packager in App store connect.
I get error:
Embedded binary's bundle identifier is not prefixed with the parent app's bundle identifier.
The only solution i've seen to this error involves xcode/a mac, being without which doesn't help
The app I work on uses WKWebView to render customer data. In iPadOS 26, we observe that there is a delay when resizing the window (and thus the web view) before the content is re-rendered. The same behavior is visible in Safari.
For demonstration purposes, consider this test page: https://phet-dev.colorado.edu/html/build-an-atom/0.0.0-3/simple-text-only-test-page.html
Initially, the window is small:
Then when the window is expanded, the content scales up temporarily:
It eventually re-renders to the correct size, but then if you make the window small again, you get (temporarily):
Is there anyway around this behavior? We would love to have the content reflow interactively.
Hello,
In iOS 26 beta, we are seeing an unexpected behavior when using SwiftUI WebView (or a custom WKWebView via UIViewRepresentable).
When an alert is presented above the WebView, the WebView immediately reloads to its initial page. The alert itself also disappears instantly, making it impossible for the user to interact with it.
This issue occurs both with the new SwiftUI WebView / WebPage API and with a wrapped WKWebView. The problem was not present in previous iOS versions (iOS 17/18).
Steps to reproduce:
Create a SwiftUI view with a WebView (pointing to any URL).
Add a toolbar button that toggles a SwiftUI alert.
Run the app on iOS 26 beta.
Tap the button to trigger the alert.
Expected behavior:
The WebView should remain as-is, and the alert should stay visible until the user dismisses it.
Actual behavior:
As soon as the alert appears, the WebView reloads and resets to the initial page. The alert disappears immediately.
Minimal Example:
struct ContentView: View {
@State private var showAlert = false
var body: some View {
NavigationStack {
WebView(URL(string: "https://apple.com")!)
.toolbar {
ToolbarItem(placement: .topBarTrailing) {
Button("Close") {
showAlert = true
}
}
}
.alert("Confirm close?", isPresented: $showAlert) {
Button("Cancel", role: .cancel) {}
Button("Close", role: .destructive) {}
}
}
}
}
I'm using Xcode Version 26.0 beta 7
Thanks for your help.
