Hi,
On macOS I used to open MP3 and MP4 files with ExtAudioFile. For a few years it doesn't work anymore.
So I decided to try different macOS API using the AudioFileID of AudioToolbox framework.
I decided to write a test:
https://gist.github.com/joelkraehemann/7f5b241b52ca38c3a765c138fb647588
It fails right here:
AudioFileOpenWithCallbacks()
By telling OSStatus error 1954115647, which means kAudioFileUnsupportedFileTypeError.
The filename was set to an MP4 file:
~/Music/test.mp4
Howto fix this?
regards, Joël

Hi all,
I've developed an audio DSP application in C++ using AudioToolbox and CoreAudio on MacOS 14.4.1 with Xcode 15.
I use an AudioQueue for input and another for output. This works great.
I'm now adding real-time audio analysis eg spectral analysis. I want this to run independently of my audio processing so it can not interfere with audio playback. Taps on AudioQueues seem to be a good way of doing this...
Since the analytics won't modify the audio data, I am using a Siphon Tap by setting the AudioQueueProcessingTapFlags to
kAudioQueueProcessingTap_PreEffects | kAudioQueueProcessingTap_Siphon;
This works fine on my output queue. However, on my input queue the Tap callback is called once and then a EXC_BAD_ACCESS occurs - screen shot below.
NB: I believe that a callback should only call AudioQueueProcessingTapGetSourceAudio when not using a Siphon, so I don't call it.
Relevant code:
AudioQueueProcessingTapCallback tap_callback) {
// Makes an audio tap for a queue
void * tap_data_ptr = NULL;
AudioQueueProcessingTapFlags tap_flags =
kAudioQueueProcessingTap_PostEffects
| kAudioQueueProcessingTap_Siphon;
uint32_t max_frames = 0;
AudioStreamBasicDescription asbd;
AudioQueueProcessingTapRef tap_ref;
OSStatus status = AudioQueueProcessingTapNew(queue_ref,
tap_callback,
tap_data_ptr,
tap_flags,
&max_frames,
&asbd,
&tap_ref);
if (status != noErr) printf("Error while making Tap\n");
else printf("Successfully made tap\n");
}
void tapper(void * tap_data,
AudioQueueProcessingTapRef tap_ref,
uint32_t number_of_frames_in,
AudioTimeStamp * ts_ptr,
AudioQueueProcessingTapFlags * tap_flags_ptr,
uint32_t * number_of_frames_out_ptr,
AudioBufferList * buf_list) {
// Callback function for audio queue tap
printf("Tap callback");
}```

Hello,
We're seeing an intermittent issue when playing back FairPlay-protected HLS downloads while the device is offline.
Assets are downloaded using AVAggregateAssetDownloadTask with FairPlay protection.
After download, asset.assetCache.isPlayableOffline == true.
On first playback attempt (offline), ~8% of downloads fail.
Retrying playback always works. We recreate the asset and player on each attempt.
During the playback setup, we try to load variants via:
try await asset.load(.variants)
This call sometimes fails with:
Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1009 “The Internet connection appears to be offline.” UserInfo={NSUnderlyingError=0x105654a00 {Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1009 “The Internet connection appears to be offline.” UserInfo={NSDescription=The Internet connection appears to be offline.}}, NSErrorFailingURLStringKey=file:///private/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/2DDF9D7C-9197-46BE-8690-C23EE75C9E90/Library/com.apple.UserManagedAssets.XVvqfh/Baggage_9DD4E2D3F9C0E68F.movpkg/, NSErrorFailingURLKey=file:///private/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/2DDF9D7C-9197-46BE-8690-C23EE75C9E90/Library/com.apple.UserManagedAssets.XVvqfh/Baggage_9DD4E2D3F9C0E68F.movpkg/, NSURL=file:///private/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/2DDF9D7C-9197-46BE-8690-C23EE75C9E90/Library/com.apple.UserManagedAssets.XVvqfh/Baggage_9DD4E2D3F9C0E68F.movpkg/, AVErrorFailedDependenciesKey=(
“assetProperty_HLSAlternates”
), NSLocalizedDescription=The Internet connection appears to be offline.}
This variant load is used to determine available audio tracks, check for Dolby support, and apply user language preferences.
After this step, the AVPlayerItem also fails via Combine’s publisher for .status.
However, retrying the entire process immediately after (same offline conditions, same asset path, new AVURLAsset) results in successful playback.
Assets are represented using the following class:
public class DownloadedAsset: AVURLAsset {
public let id: String
public let localFileUrl: URL
public let fairplayLicenseUrlString: String?
public let drmToken: String?
var isProtected: Bool {
return fairplayLicenseUrlString != nil
}
public init(id: String,
localFileUrl: URL,
fairplayLicenseUrlString: String?,
drmToken: String?) {
self.id = id
self.localFileUrl = localFileUrl
self.fairplayLicenseUrlString = fairplayLicenseUrlString
self.drmToken = drmToken
super.init(url: localFileUrl, options: nil)
}
}
We use user-selected quality levels to control bitrate and multichannel (e.g. Dolby 5.1) downloads:
let downloadQuality = UserDefaults.standard.downloadVideoQuality
let bitrate: Int
let shouldDownloadMultichannelTracks: Bool
switch downloadQuality {
case .dataSaver:
shouldDownloadMultichannelTracks = false
bitrate = 596564
case .standard:
shouldDownloadMultichannelTracks = false
bitrate = 1503844
case .best:
shouldDownloadMultichannelTracks = true
bitrate = 7038970
}
var selections = multichannelIdentifiedMediaSelections
if !shouldDownloadMultichannelTracks {
selections = selections.filter { !$0.isMultichannel }
}
let task = session.aggregateAssetDownloadTask(
with: asset,
mediaSelections: selections.map { $0.mediaSelection },
assetTitle: title,
assetArtworkData: nil,
options: [AVAssetDownloadTaskMinimumRequiredMediaBitrateKey: bitrate]
)
Seen on devices running iOS 16, iOS 17, and iOS 18.
What could cause the initial failure of an otherwise valid, offline-ready FairPlay HLS asset?
Could .load(.variants) internally trigger a failed network resolution, even when offline?
Is there an internal caching or initialization behavior in AVFoundation that might explain why the second attempt works?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

I'm using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode in my native iOS application, which is similar to Google Meet, using the VideoSDK.live Native iOS SDK. The SDK has built-in support for PiP and it's working fine for the most part.
However, I'm running into a problem:
When the app enters PiP mode, the local camera (self-video) of the participant freezes or stops. I want to fix this and achieve the same smooth behavior seen in apps like Google Meet and WhatsApp, where the local camera keeps working even in PiP mode.
I've been trying to find documentation or examples on how to achieve this but haven't had much luck. I came across a few mentions that using the camera in the background may require special entitlements from Apple (like in the entitlements file). Most of the official documentation says background camera access is restricted due to Apple’s privacy policies.
So my questions are:
Has anyone here successfully implemented background camera access in PiP mode on iOS?
If yes, what permissions or entitlements are required?
How do apps like WhatsApp and Google Meet achieve this functionality on iPhones?
Any help, advice, or pointers would be really appreciated!

In Final Cut Pro, keyframes for transform parameters (such as Position, Scale, and Rotation) are automatically set to “Smooth” interpolation. This often results in undesired easing between keyframes, especially when linear motion is required.
Currently, we have to manually adjust each keyframe to "Linear" using the Video Animation Editor, which can be time-consuming when working with many keyframes.
Would it be possible to add an option to set the default keyframe interpolation to "Linear"—either globally in Preferences or per parameter in the Inspector?
This would greatly streamline the animation workflow for many editors.
Thank you for considering this request!

At WWDC25 we launched a new type of Lab event for the developer community - Group Labs. A Group Lab is a panel Q&A designed for a large audience of developers. Group Labs are a unique opportunity for the community to submit questions directly to a panel of Apple engineers and designers. Here are the highlights from the WWDC25 Group Lab for Camera & Photos.

Question 10
Can we directly integrate auto-capture triggers (e.g., when image is steady or text is detected) using Vision and AVFoundation?
Yes apps can use AVCaptureSession's VDO + AVCapturePhotoOutput, run vision on VDO buffers and capture photo when certain scene or text is detected.
Just to be careful to run Vision on VDO buffers async so it doesn't cause frame drops.
Question 11
What Camera or Photos framework features support working with images from external media, like connected cameras or SD cards? Any best practices?
The ImageCaptureCore framework supports camera devices, memory cards, scanners
read and write, where supported
check out the docs to see how to browse connected devices, folders, files, etc.
Question 12
Hi Brad, to follow up on your SwiftUI cautionary note: using AVCaptureVideoPreview inside a UIViewRepresentable, is okay, right? Thanks all for the great info!
Yes, this is totally fine.
AppKit or UIKit views inside appropriate SwiftUI representables should be equivalent performance
Question 13
What’s the “right” way to transition media in my photos app between HDR modes? When I’m in a one-up view, we use HDR, but in other contexts (like thumbnail) we don’t want HDR. Is there a nice way to tone map?
There’s a suite of new System Tone Mapper APIs in this years’ OSes
CoreImage ImageKit CoreAnimation, CoreGraphics
For example:
CoreImage: new CISystemToneMap filter.
CoreAnimation: layer.preferredDynamicRange = CADynamicRangeConstrainedHigh
Using image views (NSImageView/UIImageView/SwiftUI Image/CALayer) support animations on preferredDynamicRange
Can go from high to constrained to standard
Tone mapping is provided by the system (CISystemToneMap for controllable example)
Question 14
What is your recommendation to preprocess and upscale your depth map in order to render a realistic portrait mode image?
One way to do this: the CIEdgePreserveUpsample CIFilter can be use to upsample a lower resolution depth map by using a higher resolution RGB image as a guide.
Question 15
For buffering frames for later processing from real-time camera output should we prefer a AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer centered approach or AVCaptureVideoDataOutputSampleBufferDelegate centered approach? When would we use each?
AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer and AVCaptureVideoDataOutputSampleBufferDelegate are used hand in hand for custom camera preview.
For buffering for later processing, ensure you make copies of VDO buffers to not drop frames from the output
Question 16
Hello, my question is on Deferred Photo Processing? Say I have a photo capture app that adds a CIFilter to the capture. How can I take advantage of Deferred Photo Processing? Since I don’t know how to detect when the deferred captured photo is ready
CIFilter can be called on the final at that point
Photo will have to be re-inserted into the Photo library as adjustment
Question 17
Is digital zoom (e.g., 1.5x) before taking a photo the same as cropping the photo afterward?
digital zoom upscales the image to output dimensions and cropping will yield a smaller output image
while digital zoom will crop, it also upscales
Question 18
How do you design camera interfaces that work for both casual users and photography enthusiasts?
Progressive disclosure: Put the most common controls up front, and make it easy for pros to drill down.
Sensible Defaults: Choose defaults that work well for casual users, but allow those defaults to be modified for photography enthusiasts
A good philosophy is: Keep the simple things easy, make the hard things possible
Question 19
Recent iPhone models introduced macro mode which automatically switch between lenses to take into account of the focal distance difference. Is there official API to implement this, or should I implement them myself using LiDAR values.
Using builtInTripleCamera and builtInDualWideCamera will automatically switch to macro when available
Question 20
a couple of years ago at WWDC, the option of replacing a camera with a virtual camera was mentioned. How does one do that - make the “physical” camera effectively disappear, so only the virtual camera is accessible to the user?
You can't prevent the built-in camera from being available to the user
Question 21
Can developers now integrate custom Core ML models with Vision for on-device photo analysis more seamlessly?
Yes they can, use CoreMLRequest , provide their model container
Been supported for a while (iOS 18/macOS 15)
For more details go to Machine Learning & AI group lab Thursday
use smaller images for better performance
Question 22
What would you recommend for capture of the new immersive and spatial formats?
To capture Spatial Video use AVCaptureMovieFileOutput’s spatialVideoCaptureEnabled property
Not all device formats support spatial capture, check AVCaptureDevice.activeFormat.spatialVideoCaptureSupported
See WWDC 2024 talk “Build compelling spatial photo and video experiences” for more details
Question 23
You mentioned JPEG-XL. What is the current status of support on iOS and macOS for encoding and decoding?
For decoding, we support JPEG-XL files in all our OSes, regular SDR files, as well as ISO HDR files.
For encoding, we only support JPEG-XL for ProRAW DNG capture in the Camera app or via third-party AVFoundation APIs.
If you have any requests for improvement or new features related to JPEG-XL, please file a Feedback request using the Feedback Assistant.

Hi,
I'm developing a SwiftUI app using RealityKit and ARKit for an AR measuring feature. I’ve noticed that after navigating away from my AR view and performing extensive cleanup (including removing all anchors/entities, pausing the ARSession, and nil-ing out all references), memory usage remains elevated and sometimes grows with repeated AR sessions.
Each time I enter and exit the AR view, memory increases
The memory does not return to the baseline after cleanup, even though all custom objects are deallocated.
Are there best practices beyond what I’ve described to ensure all ARKit/RealityKit resources are released after an AR session?

Question 24
What’s the best approach for optimizing barcode scanning using AVFoundation or Vision in low-light or angled scenarios
Turn on flash in low-light scenarios
Lower framerate to improve exposure and reduce noise
Wait until the capture is in focus/notify your user that they need to get closer
Question 25
Recent iPhone models introduced macro mode which automatically switch between lenses to take into account of the focal distance difference. Is there official API to implement this, or should I implement them myself using LiDAR values.
Using builtInTripleCamera and builtInDualWideCamera will automatically switch to macro when available
Question 26
Is there a way to quickly create a thumbnail after the user selects an image with PhotosPicker?
File provider API
Additional questions from the WWDC25 in-person labs that occurred later in the WWDC week
Question 1
When should I build my custom photo picker instead of using the system one?
Always start with the system picker -> try embeddable customization APIs -> fallback to custom picker for very special needs
Question 2
I'm building a new camera app for pros and I want to give my users the most un-processed image possible, and the most control over the capture as possible. How can I do that with AVCapture?
If stills, Brief Bayer RAW capture overview, or Pro RAW if you want Apple's processing and dynamic range
If video, talk about prores LOG.
Custom exposure settings are available throguh the apis
maybe global/local tonemapping discussion?

I found that the aggregated device correctly obtains input channels in the standard microphone mode. However, in voice isolation mode, it only retrieves channels from the first sub-device in the aggregated device's list. If I want to properly obtain channel information in voice isolation mode, how should I do it?
I prefer to use the album fetched from the library instead of the catalog since this is faster. If doing so, how can I check if all tracks of an album are added to the library. In this case I'd like to fetch the catalog version or throw an error (for example when offline).
Using .with(.tracks) on the library album fetches the tracks added to the library.
The trackCount property is referring to the tracks that can be fetched from the library.
The isComplete property is always nil when fetching from the library.
One possible way is checking the trackNumber and discCount properties. However this only detects that not all tracks of an album are added to the library if there is a song not added ahead of one that is. I'd like to be able to handle this edge case as well.
Is there currently a way to do this? I'd prefer to not rely on the apple music catalog for this since this is supposed to work offline as well. Fetching and storing all trackIDs when connected and later comparing against these would work, but this would potentially mean storing tens of thousands of track ids.
Thank you

Hi,
I’m building a PPG-based heart rate feature where the user places their finger over the rear telephoto camera. On iPhone 16 Pro Max, I'm explicitly selecting the telephoto lens like this:
videoDevice = AVCaptureDevice.default(.builtInTelephotoCamera, for: .video, position: .back)
And trying to lock it:
if #available(iOS 15.0, *),
device.activePrimaryConstituentDeviceSwitchingBehavior != .unsupported {
try? device.lockForConfiguration()
device.setPrimaryConstituentDeviceSwitchingBehavior(.locked, restrictedSwitchingBehaviorConditions: [])
device.unlockForConfiguration()
}
I also lock everything else to prevent dynamic changes:
try device.lockForConfiguration()
device.focusMode = .locked
device.exposureMode = .locked
device.whiteBalanceMode = .locked
device.videoZoomFactor = 1.0
device.automaticallyEnablesLowLightBoostWhenAvailable = false
device.automaticallyAdjustsVideoHDREnabled = false
device.unlockForConfiguration()
Despite this, the camera still switches to another lens, especially under different lighting, even though the user’s finger fully covers the lens.
Questions:
How can I completely prevent lens switching in this scenario?
Would using videoZoomFactor = 3.0 or 5.0 better enforce use of the telephoto lens?
Thanks!
Gal
Two issues:
No matter what I set in
try audioSession.setPreferredSampleRate(x)
the sample rate on both iOS and macOS is always 48000 when the output goes through the speaker, and 24000 when my Airpods connect to an iPhone/iPad.
Now, I'm checking the current output loudness to animate a 3D character, using
mixerNode.installTap(onBus: 0, bufferSize: y, format: nil) { [weak self] buffer, time in
Task { @MainActor in
// calculate rms and animate character accordingly
but any buffer size under 4800 is just ignored and the buffers I get are 4800 sized.
This is ok, when the sampleRate is currently 48000, as 10 samples per second lead to decent visual results.
But when AirPods connect, the samplerate is 24000, which means only 5 samples per second, so the character animation looks lame.
My AVAudioEngine setup is the following:
audioEngine.connect(playerNode, to: pitchShiftEffect, format: format)
audioEngine.connect(pitchShiftEffect, to: mixerNode, format: format)
audioEngine.connect(mixerNode, to: audioEngine.outputNode, format: nil)
Now, I'd be fine if the outputNode runs at whatever if it needs, as long as my tap would get at least 10 samples per second.
PS: Specifying my favorite format in the
let format = AVAudioFormat(standardFormatWithSampleRate: 48_000, channels: 2)!
mixerNode.installTap(onBus: 0, bufferSize: y, format: format)
doesn't change anything either
After Picture-in-Picture is opened on the camera interface, the custom UI cannot be displayed. Is there any way to make the custom UI visible? If custom UI cannot be displayed, how do teleprompter-type apps in the store manage to show custom teleprompter text within the camera?

I'm developing an iOS app that requires continuous audio recording.
Currently, when a phone call comes in, the AVAudioSession is interrupted and recording stops completely during the ringing phase.
While I understand recording should stop if the call is answered, my app needs to continue recording while the phone is merely ringing.
I've observed that Apple's Voice Memos app maintains recording during incoming call rings. This indicates the hardware and iOS are capable of supporting this functionality.
Request
Please advise on any available AVAudioSession configurations or APIs that would allow my app to:
Continue recording during an incoming call ring
Only stop recording if/when the call is actually answered
Impact
This interruption significantly impacts the user experience and core functionality of my app. Workarounds like asking users to enable airplane mode are impractical and create a poor user experience.
Questions
Is there an approved way to maintain microphone access during call rings?
If not currently possible, could this capability be considered for addition to a future iOS SDK?
Are there any interim solutions or best practices Apple recommends for this use case?
Thank you for your help.
SUPPORT INFORMATION
Did someone from Apple ask you to submit a code-level support request?
No
Do you have a focused test project that demonstrates your issue?
Yes, I have a focused test project to submit with my request
What code level support issue are you having?
Problems with an Apple framework API in my app
Hi, I'm trying to plan out development of an app and am wondering if it is possible to have user generated content automatically populate into a custom shazamkit catalogue and be able to query this catalogue non-locally?
Storing all the submissions locally would obviously not scale.
Is there any way for me to use an AutoMix api in my IOS apps, I would play tracks using the Apple Music api and use AutoMix to attempt to merge tracks.
Is this feature/api available to developers.
I’m developing a hybrid app (WebView / Turbo Native) that uses getUserMedia to access the back camera for a PPG/heart rate measurement feature (the user places their finger on the camera).
Problem: Even when I specify constraints like:
{
video: {
deviceId: '...',
facingMode: { exact: 'environment' },
advanced: [{ zoom: 1.0 }]
},

On iPhone 15 (iOS 18), iOS unexpectedly switches between the wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses during the measurement.
This breaks the heart rate detection, and it forces the user to move their finger in the middle of the measurement.
Question: Is there any way, via getUserMedia/WebRTC, to force iOS to use only the wide-angle lens and prevent automatic lens switching?
I know that with AVFoundation (Swift) you can pick .builtInWideAngleCamera, but I’m hoping to avoid building a custom native layer and would prefer to stick with WebView/JavaScript if possible to save time and complexity.
Any suggestions, workarounds, or updates from Apple would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot!
I am developing an app that uses MusicKit to play music and then I need to have spoken words played to the user, while ducking the audio coming from MusicKit (application music player)
the built in Siri voices are not off sufficient quality so I am using an external service to create an mp3 file and then play this back using AVAudioSession
Sample code below
the problem I am having is that .duckOthers is not ducking the Application Music Player output
Is this a bug or am I doing this wrong?
// Configure audio session for system-wide ducking
try AVAudioSession.sharedInstance().setCategory(.playback, mode: .spokenAudio, options: [.duckOthers, .mixWithOthers])
try AVAudioSession.sharedInstance().setActive(true)
// Set the ducking level to maximum
try AVAudioSession.sharedInstance().setPreferredIOBufferDuration(0.005)
// Create and configure audio player
self.audioPlayer = try AVAudioPlayer(data: audioData)
self.audioPlayer?.delegate = self
self.audioPlayer?.volume = 1.0 // Ensure full volume for speech
self.audioPlayer?.prepareToPlay()
// Set the audio player's settings for maximum clarity
self.audioPlayer?.enableRate = false
self.audioPlayer?.pan = 0.0 // Center the audio
self.audioPlayer?.play()
