Hello everyone,
I'm trying to figure out how to transmit a UIImage (png or tiff) securely to an application running in my desktop browser (Mac or PC). The desktop application and iOS app would potentially be running on the same local network (iOS hotspot or something) or have no internet connection at all.
I'm trying to securely send over an image that the running desktop app could ingest. I was thinking something like a local server securely accepting image data from an iPhone.
Any suggestions ideas or where to look for more info would be greatly appreciated!

Understanding Also-Ran Connections
Network framework implements the Happy Eyeballs algorithm. That might create more on-the-wire connections than you expect. There are two common places where folks notice this:
When looking at a packet trace
When implementing a listener
Imagine that you’ve implemented a TCP server using NWListener and you connect to it from a client using NWConnection. In many situations there are multiple network paths between the client and the server. For example, on a local network there’s always at least two paths: the link-local IPv6 path and either an infrastructure IPv4 path or the link-local IPv4 path.
When you start your NWConnection, Network framework’s Happy Eyeballs algorithm might [1] start a TCP connection for each of these paths. It then races those connections. The one that connects first is the ‘winner’, and Network framework uses that connection for your traffic. Once it has a winner, the other connections, the also-ran connections, are redundant, and Network framework just closes them.
You can observe this behaviour on the client side by looking in the system log. Many Network framework log entries (subsystem com.apple.network) contain a connection identifier. For example C8 is the eighth connection started by this process. Each connection may have child connections (C8.1, C8.2, …) and grandchild connections (C8.1.1, C8.1.2, …), and so on. You’ll see state transitions for these child connections occurring in parallel. For example, the following log entries show that C8 is racing the connection of two grandchild connections, C8.1.1 and C8.1.2:

You also see this on the server side, but in this case each connection is visible to your code. When you connect from the client, Network framework calls your listener’s new connection handler with multiple connections. One of those is the winning connection and you’ll receive traffic on it. The others are the also-ran connections, and they close promptly.
IMPORTANT Depending on network conditions there may be no also-ran connections. Or there may be lots of them. If you want to test the also-ran connection case, use Network Link Conditioner to add a bunch of delay to your packets.
You don’t need to write special code to handle also-ran connections. From the perspective of your listener, these are simply connections that open and then immediately close. There’s no difference between an also-ran connection and, say, a connection from a client that immediately crashes. Or a connection generated by someone doing a port scan. Your server must be resilient to such things.
However, the presence of these also-ran connections can be confusing, especially if you’re just getting started with Network framework, and hence this post.

Our app uses Network Extension / Packet Tunnel Provider to establish VPN connections on macOS and iOS.
We have observed that after creating a utun device and adding any IPv4 routes (NEPacketTunnelNetworkSettings.IPv4Settings), the OS automatically adds several host routes via utun to services such as Akamai, Apple Push, etc. These routes appear to correspond to TCP flows that were active at the moment the VPN connection was established. When a particular TCP flow ends, the corresponding host route is deleted. We understand this is likely intended to avoid breaking existing TCP connections.
However, we find the behavior of migrating existing TCP flows to the new utun interface simply because any IPv4 route is added somewhat questionable. This approach would make sense in a "full-tunnel" scenario — for example, when all IPv4 traffic (e.g., 0.0.0.0/0) is routed through the tunnel — but not necessarily in a "split-tunnel" configuration where only specific IPv4 routes are added.
Is there any way to control or influence this behavior?
Would it be possible for FlowDivert to differentiate between full-tunnel and split-tunnel cases, and only preserve existing TCP flows via utun in the full-tunnel scenario?

I am currently developing an app that utilizes Wi-Fi Aware.
According to the Wi-Fi Aware framework examples and the WWDC25 session on Wi-Fi Aware, discovery is handled using DevicePairingView and DevicePicker from the DeviceDiscoveryUI module.
However, these SwiftUI views present their connection UI modally when tapped. My app's design requires the ability to control the presentation of this UI programmatically, rather than relying on a user tap.
While inspecting the DeviceDiscoveryUI module, I found DDDevicePairingViewController and DDDevicePickerViewController, which appear to be the UIViewController counterparts to the SwiftUI views.
The initializer for DDDevicePairingViewController accepts a ListenerProvider, so it seems I can pass the same ListenerProvider instance that is used with the DevicePairingView.
However, the initializer for DDDevicePickerViewController requires an NWBrowser.Descriptor, which seems incompatible with the parameters used for the SwiftUI DevicePicker.
I have two main questions:
(1) Can DDDevicePairingViewController and DDDevicePickerViewController be officially used for Wi-Fi Aware pairing?
(2) Are there any plans to provide more customization or programmatic control over the DevicePairingView and DevicePicker (for example, allowing us to trigger their modal presentation programmatically)?

Hi,
I observed some unexpected behavior and hope that someone can enlighten me as to what this is about:
mDNSResponder prepends IP / network based default search domains that are checked before any other search domain. E.g. 0.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. would be used for an interface with an address in the the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. This is done for any configured non-link-local IP address.
I tried to find any mention of an approach like this in RFCs but couldn't spot anything.
Please note that this is indeed a search domain and different from reverse-DNS lookups.
Example output of tcpdump for ping devtest:

My team is developing an enterprise VPN application that needs to respond to Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile installations and removals in real-time. Our app uses the NetworkExtension framework and needs to update the UI immediately when VPN configurations are added or removed via MDM.
We are currently observing NEVPNConfigurationChangeNotification to detect VPN configuration changes:
While NEVPNConfigurationChangeNotification fires reliably when users manually remove VPN profiles through Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, it appears to have inconsistent behavior when MDM profiles containing VPN configurations are installed programmatically via MDM systems.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
From MDM Admin Console: Deploy a new VPN profile to the test device
On Device: Wait for MDM profile installation (usually silent, no user interaction required)
Check Device Settings: Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to confirm profile is installed
Return to App: Check if the UI shows the new VPN profile
I'm using NERelayManager to set Relay configuration which all works perfectly fine.
I then do a curl with the included domain and while I see QUIC connection succeeds with relay server and H3 request goes to the server, the connection gets abruptly closed by the client with "Software caused connection abort".

Relay server otherwise works fine with our QUIC MASQUE clients but not with built-in macOS MASQUE client. Anything I'm missing?

Hello,
I understand that to discover and pair a device or accessory with Wi-Fi Aware, we can use either the DeviceDiscoveryUI or AccessorySetupKitUI frameworks. During the pairing process, both frameworks prompt the user to enter a pairing code. Is this step mandatory?
What alternatives exist for devices or accessories that don't have a way to communicate a pairing code to the user (for example, devices or accessories without a display or voice capability)?

I want to add more cipher suites. I use NWConnection to make a connection.
Before I use sec_protocol_options_append_tls_ciphersuite method to add more cipher suites, I found that Apple provided 20 cipher suites shown in the client hello packet. But after I added three more cipher suites, I found that nothing changed, and still original 20 cipher suites shown in the client hello packet when I made a new connection.
The following is the code about connection. I want to add three more cipher suites: tls_ciphersuite_t.ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256,

Our Device want to have multiple Instance name for different services.

Will BCT confuse this as multiple device connected in the network and cause it to fail? Does Bonjour only allows only a Single Instance name with multiple services?
I am developing a program on my chip and attempting to establish a connection with the WiFi Aware demo app launched by iOS 26. Currently, I am encountering an issue during the pairing phase.

I develop a Network Extension with NEFilterDataProvider and want to understand how to stop or disable it on exit of the base app without deactivating NE from OS and leave ability to start it again without requiring a password from the user.
It starts normally, but when I try to disable it:

If I was to build an app that opened a web server at local host on a random port that resolved subdomains for local host at that port, but there was no certificate authority, signed certificate available to provide HTTPS security, would this be in violation of apples ATS policy
I'm trying to use NEHotspotNetwork to configure an IoT. I've read all the issues that have plagued other developers when using this framework, and I was under the impression that bugs were filed and fixed.

As you can see, one can't just use NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.apply and has to double-check to make sure that it actually succeeds, by checking to see if the SSID desired, matches the one that the device is using.
Ok, but about 50% of the time, the call to NEHotspotNetwork.fetchCurrent gives me this error:

Well, there is a workaround for that randomness too. At some point before calling this code, one can:

BUT... three issues.
The user is presented with an authorization alert: Allow "Kini" to use your location? This app needs access to you Wi-Fi name to connect to your Kini device. Along with a map with a location pin on it. This gives my users a completely wrong impression, especially for a device/app where we promise users not to track their location. They actually see a map with their location pinned on it, implying something that would freak out anyone who was expecting no tracking. I understand why an authorization is normally required, but since all we are getting is our own IoT's SSID, there should be no need for an authorization for this, and no map associated with the request. Again, they are accessing my IoT's network, NOT their home/location Wi-Fi SSID. My app already knows and specifies that network, and all I am trying to do is to work around a bug that makes it look like I have a successful return from NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.apply() when in fact the network I was looking for wasn't even on.
Not only do I get instances where the network doesn't connect, and result codes show no errors, but I also get instances where I get an alert that says that the network is unreachable, yet my IoT shows that the app is connected to its Wi-Fi. On the iOS device, I go to the Wi-Fi settings, and see that I am on the IoT's network. So basically, sometimes I connect, but the frameworks says that there is no connection, and sometimes it reports a connection when there is none.
As you can see in the code, I call cleanupHotspot() to make the iOS device get off of my temp Wi-Fi SSID. This is the code:

That code gets called by the above code when things aren't as I expect and need to cleanup. And I also call it when the user dismisses the viewcontroller that is attempting to make the connection.
It doesn't always work. I get stuck on the tempo SSID, unless I go through this whole thing again: try to make the connection again, this time it succeeds quickly, and then I can disconnect.
Any ideas?
I'm on iOS18.5, and have tried this on multiple iPhones including 11, 13 and 16.

I developed a network extension program on macOS. I tried to update the program by changing the version number. My update process was to first turn off network filtering via "NEFilterManager.sharedManager.enabled = NO", and then use "[OSSystemExtensionRequest activationRequestForExtension:bundleid queue:dispatch_get_global_queue(DISPATCH_QUEUE_PRIORITY_HIGH, 0)];" to let the system replace the old network extension program.
However, sometimes the old network extension process will become a zombie process like pid=86621 in the figure. As long as the zombie process exists, the network cannot be used. After about 10 minutes, it will be cleared and the network will be available. Restarting Wi-Fi can also clear the zombie process immediately. Why is this? How to avoid this problem?
Hi, I am making a AI-Powered app that makes api requests to the openai API. However, for security, I set up a vercel backend that handles the API calls securely, while my frontend makes a call to my vercel-hosted https endpoint. Interestingly, whenever I try to make that call on my device, an iPhone, I get this error:

I'm completely stuck because when I directly make https requests to other api's like openai's endpoint, without the proxy, it finds the server completely fine. Running my endpoint on terminal with curl also works as intended, as I see api key usages. But for some reason, on my project, it does not work. I've looked through almost every single post I could find online, but a lot all of the solutions are outdated and unhelpful.
I'm willing to schedule a call, meeting, whatever to resolve this issue and get help more in depth as well.
